Damage Inc. ‘Zine #1 (Norway) – 1987
Created by ex-MAYHEM vocalist MANIAC, the ‘zine had to be put to one side after only two issues, due the Maniac role in MAYHEM. The first issue of the ‘zine contains interviews with Mayhem, Corrosion of Conformity, Necrophagia, legendary swedish prime-movers Mefisto, Sadist and Sepultura.
Maniac talks about his joining Mayhem. Interviewed by kiorpon (himself) on Damage Inc ‘zine #1
As Damage Inc. goes to press, Mayhem is in the process of recording their latest demo, Deathcrush. The group has finally found a steady vocalist, and the choice fell on none other than Damage Inc.’s own Maniac.
Their previous vocalist, Billy, is still singing with his own group, but has teamed up with Maniac on one of the really gripping tracks on the demo, «Witching Hour». The other tracks are: «Chainsaw Gutsfuck», «Deathcrush», «Necrolust» and «Pure Fucking Armageddon» in a new arrangement. As an added attraction, Conrad Schnitzler, the undisputed king of weird music, has consented to do the intro on the demo.
I’ve heard the true Mayhem in rehearsal, and I’ve just got to say that this demo has got to be one of 1987’s best, if not THE best. Mayhem has always been black, fast and perverse, but Maniac’s voice lends a new dimension to the music. He does’t have a traditional low, dark and heavy voice. On the contrary, it’s a cross between an F-16 on full afterburner, and a chainsaw cutting sheet metal.
He makes absolutely sure that the hair on the back of your neck will never lay down again. His voice is completely horror-making! Here’s what Maniac had to say about Mayhem and the new demo.
D.I. – How did Mayhem get the idea of using you as a vocalist?
Maniac – Well, we’ve known each other for quite some time, and are pretty good friends. I’ve always admired their music, which is about the best you can come across. Their only real problem was lack of a vocalist. Billy, who sang, has his own band, so they really needed someone on a steadier basis. Myself, well, I’ve written a few songs and play a little guitar, so I formed a local group mostly for fun called Septic Cunts. We made a rehearsal tape which has been surprisingly well received, and Mayhem liked it among others. When they asked me to sing on the demo, I couldn’t very well say no!
D.I. – Have you contributed anything else to the demo?
Maniac – Yeah, we’ve collaborated a bit on the lyrics. I think you’ll find them on the definately
nauseating side of perversity!
